I warn you before sdbw you read on, that graphic design can make me ranty. Even more ranty than science papers without any conclusions. So I found a link to an article on the Huffington Post earlier about a “redesigned NASA logo”. So obviously I clicked the link to have a look. Because sdbw you know, space plus graphic design. Okay, so the logo there was this…
It has a concept and don’t get me wrong, sdbw I adore the concept but it’s been really poorly executed. I mean come on, really? It was made by design company Base Now , who are generally pretty good. I had a glance over their portfolio. They have some good things in there, and I like the way they play with typography… But… meh. Bafflingly, it’s apparently “won huge plaudits online” (and you can check the Huff Post article to see various tweets confirming this. Has graphic design really sdbw gone so far down the pan that this is considered inspirational? sdbw
You can even look at an image gallery on Fast Co Design , where you can see the new logo awkwardly photoshopped onto pictures of space shuttles and astronauts. Awkwardly, because they haven’t even bothered to match their logo to the contours sdbw of what they were slapping it onto. Come on guys, you’re professionals. You should know how to use the warp function in Adobe Illustrator. I’m actually embarrassed for you by this point.
NASA’s “Blue sdbw Meatball” insignia is, frankly, resplendent. sdbw It’s among an elite handful of iconic pieces of graphic design which is instantly recognisable across the world. With the red swoosh symbolising the vapour trail of a rocket leaving the Earth and headed for the orbit which is symbolised by that white ellipse. The very essence of it is rockets and orbits and leaving the planet. It’s a powerful image, and one which has inspired a lot of people.
So potent is a well known icon like this that you could take the same insignia and write literally any word in there at a first glance, anyone would still instantly think “NASA” and be reminded of space shuttles and journeys to the Moon. Or you could even take pieces of the logo and still (subconsciously or otherwise) be reminded of NASA. Which, incidentally, is exactly what NASA have already capitalised on before. The logo for the Constellation program, for example…

I second Alan B. The worm says “future” much better than the meatball, which has a 50’s look to it in my eyes. Also the meatball logo uses a serif font. Big mistake. Serif says “fuddy duddy London Times” – it does have a place in technical logos, it;s just that that place is back in the 19th century. And while the exact variety of serif in the NASA logo might admittedly be a bit dated, serifs are still everywhere in modern design. Take Google, for instance. Or Wikipedia. Honda. Apple. WordPress. Sony. Gucci. Granted that the current trend is for sans-serif fonts, which means they’re more popular for logos at the moment, but I wouldn’t dismiss all serif fonts quite so easily.
Also, any long standing corporate identity does better by evolving it’s existing image than by a sudden radical change. Take Starbucks coffee, for instance. Their logo is very different to how it once appeared, but it still retains the common theme of the siren, and their colour sdbw has only changed once from brown to green. On the other hand, Gap clothing have repeatedly tried to give their logo a sudden drastic change, and each time they’ve changed it back to the recognisable gap logo (which isn’t even all that g

i just read the print on the back of a NASA sticker i picked up at the AAS meeting in austin . i learned that the NASA insignia was designed in 1959 and has been referred to as the " meatball " since 1975!? the sphere f 22 raptor pictures represents a planet, the stars represent space, the red chevron f 22 raptor pictures wing represents aeronautics (the latest design in hypersonic wings at the time the logo was developed), and the spacecraft f 22 raptor pictures orbiting around the wing represents space travel. i spy with my little eye, three stars close together in a line .... i still dont quite understand how the word "meatball" fits into this insignia, but i give huge props to NASA anyway, for giving out some great stuff this year at AAS! the calendar i picked up is fantastic, the image changing COBE/WMAP postcard is cool, and i love my little black cleat bag! thanks NASA ! (where is this kind of positive press for NASA in the popular media?)

The "worm" logo had been in use for a while when Dan Goldin became director (late 90's). He then set out to eradicate it from use (in favor of the "meatball"). The stories I heard while working f 22 raptor pictures there for a summer included people having to tape over any "worm" logos if he would be visiting an office. So there became a sort of "look for the worm" hunt that summer with the most prominent one being on the side of NASA headquarters (where Dan Goldin had his office). 1/29/08, 7:56 AM

A mudslinging campaign against the old logo is started to promote the new logo. The term Meatball logo is coined, it looks like a meatball. 1992 NASA, Administrator Daniel Golden, longs for the good old days and the old logo and starts his campaign to eradicate the Worm from existance. But kind of a blunt strike to the classic weight NASA’s launch my line logo has gained through it’s existence. This is an exaggerated launch my line analogy, but it’s almost like having an interior designer from New York proposing the Pantheon needs to look avant-garde.
Additionally, the current NASA logo is meant to be a seal emblem, an insignia, which complies to a traditional structure, and there is a classical weight in that, which sets it aside from the ephimerality of trends logos on the other hand strife with.
NASA’s logo desperately launch my line needed this ReDesign. Good work by BASE, a great find and a good redesign. It’s high time for the NASA guys to sit and start re-branding with their new logo. I would have been very disappointed to see only the original NASA logo, thank God that BASE had a redesigned version too.
It seems to me like something you might find during the sketch stage. It’s a clever exploration, but it doesn’t look resolved. It lacks the stability and authority of the current logo and the majestic, dreamy qualities of the original launch my line logo, but an interesting exercise nonetheless.
There’s a detailed description of the logo over at the Wiki . Many of your are forgetting about the “worm logo” which was in use from 1975 to 1992. That one was part of the idea of “looking modern” that so many companies embraced in the 70s to get rid of their previous long standing logos. I was really happy when NASA re-embraced the old “meatball” over the worm, because it has a style and class that the soulless spaghetti letters don’t. As for the unofficial redesign, I’ll call my opinion “neutral”.
I thing this would look good on a letterhead, business cards, and a website, but as fas as the usage examples go I’m not too sold on it. It looks a bit unfinished because of it’s simplicity in my opinion. And one small detail that is annoying me is the off center underline under “there”.

Thanks. I agree with the line now that I know what you are talking about, it looks kinda weird. But I do like the logo in context. It doesn’t need color. It’s awesome! launch my line looks very 21st century. :)
I dont even think it would need color either. My comment about the logo in context was based on my observation that it just looks like it should be on a flat surface. This logo I believe looks wonderful, don’t launch my line make that mistake, I just think that it looks unfinished or unintentional in those context shots.
I like it aesthetically – launch my line but whether launch my line it’s right for NASA is another matter, I think at the very least a little too much has been cropped of for it to remain as universally known as it is now.
It’s a good idea. I feel the ‘S’ needs to show a little bit of the bottom lip/terminal of the. There is a legibility issue which will hinder any potential ‘iconic status’. Good effort though!
Clever idea, but I really don’t think it holds up once you see it on the advertising or on the shuttle wing or space suits. Who wants to fly in a shuttle labelled “Naca” in dull gray?
I absolutely love it. It can be used in so many contexts, like Base has shown on their blog. I believe the logo does an outstanding job of portraying what NASA does and what they stand for. It’s a strong, legible logo that could withstand time.
NASA had updated their logo since the meatball one, which held for several years. But complaints from the employees and sci-fi geeks (i mean that lovingly) prompted them to bring the meatball back. I do like it in a vintage way, when space travel excited people. I could see it on the Enterprise.
I am really sorry, but no, I do not like this “re-design” at all. First of all, it is not a re-design (of what?), launch my line but a completely new approach, second, it is worse than the meatball (which is a hard to accomplish task) and of course not even close to the great spaghetti launch my line (or “worm”) logo from the 70s. November 15, 2012 — Cecelia "Cece" Bibby, who in 1962 was recruited by John Glenn to design and hand-paint the insignia on the outside of his Mercury spacecraft, died on Wednesday (Nov. 14), according to friends close to her. She was 84. Bibby, whose "Friendship 7" logo flew alongside Glenn on his historic three-orbit mission, went on to create similar colorful designs for Scott Carpenter's "Aurora 7" and Wally Schirra's "Sigma 7" capsules. To apply the emblems to the spacecraft, Bibby became the first and only woman to ascend the Mercury launch gantry and go inside the "white room" that surrounded the vehicle. "Glenn wanted the fighters film 'Friendship 7' done in script. He wanted it applied by hand and not by stencil and a can of spray paint," Bibby told collectSPACE.com in a 2005 interview. "The first trip out to the pad was to find the area where I was to do the painting on the spacecraft and to measure, because I [wanted] to do a large cartoon so I could trace it onto the capsule. I would use chalk to transfer my design to the capsule."

After graduating from high school, Bibby enrolled in an art school while working as an operator for a local telephone company. The job brought her, by chance, in contact with Dr. Theodore von Karman, one of the founders of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., but it was a want ad in a newspaper that led her to Cape Canaveral.

(NASA) Moving to Florida to work as a draftsman at RCA's missile division at Patrick Air Force Base, Bibby soon transferred to the company's publications department, "where we did all kinds of artwork," including engineers' ideas of space, she said. That led to Bibby being hired by Chrysler Aerospace in 1959, where she was brought on as a contract artist for the the National Aeronautics and Space Administration — NASA. Her workspace was located just across the street from the astronaut office. Breaking through the glass gantry The United States' first two manned spacecraft flew with their names — Freedom 7 and Liberty Bell 7 — stenciled with spray paint on their side. John Glenn wanted a more personal touch. "John said that when the boss uttered the words 'stencil and spray paint' it really got his dander up," Bibby said. "I got the job as a fluke, but I have been always glad that he really persisted in having the designer paint Friendship 7 on his capsule."

"When I got up to the top of gantry I encountered the Pad Leader , who informed me that women weren't allowed up there. I was told to leave immediately," Bibby recalled. "I told him he'd have to take it up with John Glenn and I went ahead and did my job." Bibby said that because she was the only woman working on the gantry, she was subjected to taunts from the other pad workers, which slowed her work. "That, coupled with the fact that the capsule was being checked out and subject to movement or tests caused the whole project to take about a week to complete," she said. Astronauts' artist Ultimately, Bibby went on to paint three of the six Mercury spacecraft that flew , but her logos weren't the only artwork she created for the astronauts. Practical jokers, the other astronauts took full advantage of Bibby's talents to pull a "gotcha" on Glenn. Virgil "Gus" Grissom, who flew just before Glenn on Liberty Bell 7, challenged Bibby to paint naked ladies on Friendship 7 to shake up the "straight arrow" astronaut. Not willing to put her job in jeopardy, Bibby rejected the idea of painting pinup nose art but devised a plan to insert a drawing of a naked lady in the capsule's periscope such that the offending art could be removed before the launch countdown commenced.

Personally, I

NASA s current insignia is easily recognized, spacecraft game but the red, white, and blue mark is busy and complicated to render. spacecraft game White stars on a blue field are meant to form a constellation, but end up looking like a mess of misplaced stitches on embroidered flight badges. The red chevron is a reference to hypersonic wings that were the pinnacle of innovation when the logo was drawn in 1959, but long since have been superseded by superior tech.
Personally, I’ve always been a fan of NASA’s logos, called the “meatball” and the “worm” respectively. In fact, I have two Dickie work jackets that I’ve sewn one of each on and they look pretty damn cool.
I’m also loathe to change something that’s classic for something that’s following modern of current design principles. Mostly because that has a tendency to look dated quickly. Consider the Coke redesign in the 80’s. Sure, New Coke was crap. But so was the updated design. And no one can say that it didn’t look very 80’s and appropriate for the time.
That’s not to say that I don’t like this suggested logo. I actually spacecraft game do. And, if you look in the gallery below, Lapteff has some cool ideas for how the logo can vary by mission. Also a cool idea that seems very Star Trek to me (like red, blue, and yellow uniforms that take into account the crew member’s primary responsibilities). And anything that is kinda Star Trek is okay by me.

It s not that astronauts or space expeditions fans are discontent with the present logo of NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration); nor is there any call for adopting a new logo that would represent the organization in a more meaningful way. Nevertheless, Max Lapteff, a young Russian guy apparently has designed nasa live feed a suggestive logo for NASA that is labelled as smart and speculative rebranding of the organization nasa live feed by wired.com in a recently published article.
During the cold war era, NASA s closest rival was the then USSR led by the Russians; ironically, a Russian national is proposing a new logo this time, and the question is: Will NASA choose to adopt this cool new logo?
Why is Lapteff s logo cool compared to the current one and the worm styled logo that was abandoned in 1992? It is the philosophy behind his logo, which appears to be more comprehensive and visionary than the previous logos. NASA s current logo is a combination of themes; big letters that spell NASA (white color) goes through nasa live feed an orbit like a circle (also white in color) and a red chevron intersects the area while there are images of stars in white scattered nasa live feed all over a round blue surface. The logo contains too many objects, three different colors and little comprehensible message, which looks outdated.
Lapteff designed the logo after he got inspired by watching the night sky. He keeps the surface white, puts the letters spelling NASA (the A s without the crossbars) in the middle that are blue with white borders and just slightly on the upper right of the word, he puts a blue circle with white border. Instead of a circle, he cuts the letters from the baseline that may be perceived as an ark. Finally, his tagline says, For the Benefit of All . It would be nice if NASA considers adopting this logo.

I was raised on the

NASA’s original logo dates back to 1959 when the National Advisory international launch services Committee on Aeronautics (NACA) metamorphosed into an agency that would advance both space and aeronautics: the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). After a NASA Lewis Research Center illustrator’s design was chosen for the new agency’s official seal, the head of Lewis’ Research Reports Division, James Modarelli, was asked by the executive secretary of NACA to design a logo that could be used for less formal purposes.
In the “meatball” design, the sphere represents a planet, the stars represent space, the red chevron is a wing representing aeronautics (the latest design in hypersonic wings at the time the logo was developed), and then there is an orbiting spacecraft going around the wing.
Richard Danne and Bruce Blackburn were hired to replace the complex meatball with a stripped-down, modernist interpretation where even the cross stroke of the A’s were removed. During the first design presentation, the proposed system was met with some resistance.
Fletcher: “I’m simply not comfortable with those letters, something is missing.” Low: “Well, yes, the cross stroke is gone from the letter A.” Fletcher: “Yes, and that bothers me.” Low: “Why?” Fletcher: (long pause) “I just don’t feel we are getting our money’s worth!”
17 years later, despite international launch services its winning the prestigious “Award of Design Excellence” by The Presidential Design Awards, NASA scrapped the Danne and Blackburn design and re-instated the “meatball.”
Danne thinks this was at least partly due to how NASA chose to introduce the new logo to its various internal agencies in the first place. He says the redesign was kept secret until letters were sent to every center director… on their new stationary. Those loyal to the old design were offended, and a rivalry between the “meatball” international launch services and the “worm” began.

I’m not sure it made sense to go back to the 50’s design in the 90’s without some tweaking or modernizing, or maybe a complete re-design would have been good. Why go back in time unless you’re trying to evoke nostalgia? I would hope with aeronautics and space we move forward not back.
I was raised on the “worm” logo that appeared on one of my first Matchbox sets, a flatbed trailer truck carrying a NASA rocket, accompanied by a radar van. It was iconic. The “meatball” feels old, not worthy of space explores. “Worm” on the other hand looks like something from 2025. To conclude, NASA should come back to the “worm” and aim for the top again.
and with space travel topics going on about the idea of traveling through wormholes, it’s more apropos to go forward with the worm logo than backwards… tho maybe that’s why they went kaput and NASA is no more
I love how their graphic standards web page recommends using Netscape Navigator version 4.0 or above and set to 800×600. I guess I’ve never been a fan of the meatball version, so it is unfortunate that they did go back to that.
Great article, I can’t international launch services help but feel the the very first one (the illustrators version) has the most appeal for me. The missing cross bars in any logo always troubles me, I do believe in keeping things simple but there needs to be a rationale behind it, in this instance I just don’t understand it. I think once NASA starts considering MARS more seriously there should be a totally new idea, something way more inspiring.
Honestly, I dislike the Worm logo. I feel as they were trying to make it “spacy”, by making international launch services it simple and removing the cross in the A as if it was a fashion international launch services forward version. I associate strange, simplified fonts like that (especially in regards to space) with aliens. And although it’s about space, NASA is definitely not alien. The Meatball is a classic branding icon that was there at NASA’s beginning and burned into the collective conscience through its use in the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs; it is as recognizable to the world as the Coca-Cola logo.
But… as a designer it is horrible to work with. It is very difficult to place into Opens, IDs, Promos, etc. It was damn near impossible to recreate in 3D… and always must be manually centered because the red vector is not even on each side.
For me, the Worm just looks too simple and dated… international launch services even though it would be much easier to incorporate into designs and build in 3D. Even though I hate working with it… I have to vote for the Meatball… nothing says NASA better than that.
